Mercato Ortofrutticolo del Roero
NGS supports the digitalization of the Roero Market with an RFID traceability and fresh supply chain visibility solution designed to make the management of incoming, stored, and outgoing fresh produce more transparent, secure, and controllable. At the core of the project are uniquely identified reusable boxes and containers via RFID, following a circular economy approach: the container becomes the “carrier” of information, allowing continuous tracking of logistical steps while reducing waste, errors, and manual activities related to labels and unstructured records.
Upon arrival, packages (boxes/containers) are identified via RFID and digitally recorded, creating a reliable database that allows users to know what has arrived and when it was received, in addition to tracking the main operational steps within the market. During storage, NGS allows the designation and tracking of the cold room and placement area, building an operational map of the goods that facilitates the search for packages and the management of flows in storage areas. The platform is also prepared to integrate the collection and historical recording of environmental data along the journey — such as temperature, humidity, and ethylene — via sensors and trackers, thus providing physical traceability along with objective evidence of storage conditions (when available). For shipments, NGS enables tracking via trackers (location and transport conditions — such as temperature, humidity, and ethylene) and consolidates the main process events (reception, internal movements, shipment) into a coherent view.
Interoperability and data sharing are a cross-cutting element of the entire project: all relevant information generated in the process (container identification, logistics events, document references, environmental data when present) is structured according to standardized coding. NGS adopts an EPCIS-like approach to structure and share data in a standardized and tailored way for the different actors in the supply chain, making the information easily integrable with third-party systems and usable by various operators (market, logistics, buyer). In this way, the Roero Market can enhance service quality and reliability, improve daily operational efficiency, and strengthen trust along the fresh produce supply chain.
NGS One Platform
NGS One Platform adopts a modular edge-to-cloud architecture designed for rapid deployment in wholesale fresh produce markets and logistics hubs. It leverages RFID and BLE technologies to identify crates and logistics units, enabling traceability, indoor localization, and outbound consolidation in compliance with GS1 EPCIS 2.0 standards. Shipment and integrity data (GPS, temperature, humidity, ethylene, shocks) are linked to logistics events, creating a verifiable and shareable digital twin. An edge gateway ensures local buffering and operational continuity, while the cloud platform provides device management, dashboards, APIs, and third-party system integration.
Core building blocks are already implemented and field-tested. The solution, originated from the ATLAS H2020 Open Call where the reusable IoT trackers (including ethylene sensing) is validates, is going to be ported in a real logistics scenario (at Mercato Ortofrutticolo del Roero 1 ). Market-process components (RFID crate identification, connected weighing, cold-chain tracker, EPCIS event capture and operator workflows) will be deployed at the Roero wholesale market environment, and the integrated deployment is planned to become operational in March 2026 at a real fresh-produce hub, with remaining work focused on configuration, integration, SOP rollout, training and KPI checks (semi-controlled testing) before replication.
